He called the product \u201cGOL,\u201d imagining the candy as a soccer ball and the open mouth a net. It didn\u2019t go over well. So Bernat hired an ad agency that renamed his product \u201cChupa Chups\u201d (from the Spanish <em>chupar<\/em>, meaning \u201cto suck\u201d). All that was left was the branding. In 1969, Bernat complained about what he had while having coffee with his artist friend\u2013none other than Salvador Dal\u00ed.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-2400 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.taduadvertising.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/TADU_Reklam_Ajansi-Blog_Seker_ChupaChups_Salvador_Dali_Packaging_Logo_B\u0131y\u0131k_Ressam.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"705\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.taduadvertising.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/TADU_Reklam_Ajansi-Blog_Seker_ChupaChups_Salvador_Dali_Packaging_Logo_B\u0131y\u0131k_Ressam.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.taduadvertising.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/TADU_Reklam_Ajansi-Blog_Seker_ChupaChups_Salvador_Dali_Packaging_Logo_B\u0131y\u0131k_Ressam-255x300.jpg 255w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\"><\/p>\n<p>According to lore, \u00a0the painter went to work immediately, doodling for an hour on newspapers that were laying around. Dal\u00ed\u2019s version masterfully integrated the wordmark into the daisy design, and has hardly changed since. And Phaidon points us to one subtle, extremely smart feature of the design:<\/p>\n<p>Acutely aware of presentation, Dal\u00ed insisted that his design be placed on top of the lolly, rather than the side, so that it could always be viewed intact. It\u2019s proved to be one of the most enduring pieces of branding ever and one that\u2019s still used today, four billion sales later.<\/p>\n<p>What would induce the famous artist to take on such a project? Dinero.
